To support expansion of efficient electrified transportation systems, there is a need for developing precise and rapid methods for designing electric machines. Although their main disadvantage is the long execution time compared to analytic methods, finite element analysis remains the main method in the design of electrical machines due to its high accuracy and reliability. Precision of finite element analysis is discussed in relation to dynamometer tests conducted on a 12 kW surface-mounted permanent magnet synchronous machine, with a focus on power loss distribution.
